Audio Lag

  • I am trying to marry an NAD T761 to my UDP800 and Sony Bravia 8.  I only have stereo speakers for now (Lantana TADs and Laugs).  There is considerable offset between audio and video and I cannot figure out how to fix it.

    Configuration:

    • Video:  UPD800 to Bravia via HDMI (Bravia HDMI 3)
    • Audio:  UPD800 to T761 via analog (Disc)
      • Bravia to T761 via S/PDIF (Video 2)

When watching a disk with analog audio, there is a considerable mismatch between the two, and I think the audio lags the video.  When watching using the Bravia audio output, there is none.  I found the audio delay for the UDP800, but it seems to have no effect, regardless of setting.  The reason I think it lags is that when I use the descriptive video and leave the TV speakers up, the analog seems to lag what is coming from the Bravia.

Three questions:  Should the analog audio lag the video (I would expect the other way)?  How subtle is the audio delay on the UPD800?  What do I need to do to resolve the problem?

Thank you for whatever help you can provide.

  • Found out something recently via high-end audio/video forums and from tech reviews of the newer Sony TVs.

The Bravia 7,8 and 9 have more than 200ms of input lag from the HDMI inputs, the player is limited to 200ms analog audio delay.   The player won't be able to get audio/video in sync with it's present design.  Users often find they need to set 320ms of audio delay to get the analog audio output in sync with the TV.  These newer Sony TVs has a pretty large input lag compared to the competition.

I tried the 320ms setting with an old Sony bluray player and a Pioneer DVD player I still have, both can set 500ms of delay.  With 320ms delay audio/video was in synch (I was of course using an analog preamp, analog amp and my full-size audio speakers).

I posted on the "Feature Request" page if delay could be bumped higher in a future firmware release but the post was deleted.
