Color Space not matching

  • While reading the manual I understood the default color space was YCC 422. But when I connect the Magnetar  to a LG C4 it defaults to YCC 444. I understand the difference between these 2 is where the upsampling takes place ( the player or the tv) but can you tell me why 422 is considered default and not 444?

  • All blu rays are mastered at 4:2:0 so 4:2:2 is still an upsample. If you play a file that's 4:4:4 that's when the actual data would be there for it. There's less bandwidth at 4:2:2 vs 4:4:4 that's why it defaults to 4:2:2 and its also closer to 4:2:0

  • @Marco Reyes Thanks Marco! In the meanwhile I read in the FAQs section of the Magnetar website the current firmware of magnetar prioritizes color space,  so it defaults to 444. Maybe they didn t update the manual or consider 422 default for the reasons you described and not because it is the default value of the player.

  • @Tiago Soares no prob! The signal is 4:4:4 but what's inside aka the container is 4:2:0 color space information. Make sure you set either 10bit or 12bit too hdr10 is 10bit sdr is 8bit and I think dolby vision is up to 12bit but I'm not sure but the 1st 2 is definitely accurate
