2 Features - Additional Built-in Subtitle & Audio Controls

  • Have been enjoying the UDP800 for over a year now.  I have 2 requests to improve the quality of experience.  Have seen both features on other players, so it shouldn't be too hard ;)

    1.  Additional controls for built-in (not external) subtitles.  Specifically being able to change the brightness/opacity.  In DV/HDR the subtitles are too bright.

    2.  Option to have Bitstream & PCM selectable per codec?  eg. select Bistream for Dolby and PCM for DTS.  As an owner of the Sonos Arc (which does not support some DTS codecs) it is annoying to have to go into settings and change the setting per movie.  Altenatively being able to change the audio setting while the movie is playing which appears to currently not be possible.

  • I just want to say I agree with the first point aswell. Would love to be able to adjust luminance on subtitles (not external) like the Panasonics can do

This should be handled by the audio device. If it doesnt support a particular decoder, it can tell the tv that it should send PCM in its place. Unfortunate Sonos doesnt do this as many AVR's do. Most audio devices tell the tv if a particular decoder is unsupported, send 2 channel PCM.

Altenatively being able to change the audio setting while the movie is playing which appears to currently not be possible.

Technologically, not possible unfortunately. HDMI specification is not built to support this, especially over eARC/ARC. Most common DSP's would have a very hard time changing on the fly.

  • Thankyou for the detailed response, appreciated!

Any idea if we will see any additional controls for the display of the builtin subs?

  • @Joshua Smith Hi! In regards to luminance or some other feature?

  • @Joshua Smith There's no immediate plans to have a brightness control on subtitles. We have taken into account the request and that doesn't mean you won't see it, just not anytime in the near future. With that said, we have had customers select different color (gray ,dark gray, etc) for external subtitles (srt /ass) to acheive a similar result. For embedded subtitle, there's not much anyone can do unfortunately.
